THE VISITORS ARE STILL (NOT) OUR FRIENDS...

The new "re-imagining" of the hit sci-fi series V arrives exclusively on the UK SCI-FI channel on April 13th at 10pm. I've seen the opening four episodes previously shown in the US last year (which debuted to very good ratings of around 13 million viewers) and I have to say that I enjoyed them a lot. Though they don't (yet) have the kind of epic world encompassing scope or the huge amount of iconic main cast and support people that were in the original 1983-1985 mini-series and weekly series originally created by Kenneth Johnson, this new, tightly budgeted version has in its favour excellent CGI effects, some intriguing fresh story ideas that look likely to build on, and go beyond, the things the original series did in terms of science fiction and political allegory (though I have to say that it was very naughty of WARNER BROTHERS to try and not credit Johnson in any capacity for the new V, their unsuccessful claim being that the new series had too many new elements distinguishing it from the old show!!! Not true, I'm afraid), and a solid main cast-including LOST's lovely Elizabeth Mitchell, DOLLHOUSE's eccentric and dangerous villain, Alan Tudyk, as our series US Homeland Security force goodies, and the new series particular stand out- FIREFLY's Morena Baccarin as Anna, the beautiful, ice cool, politically savvy leader of the Visitors-a different, more subtle kind of Visitor commander/scientist than that previously played by Jane Badler as Diana in the show's earlier incarnation.

With the Visitors arrival on a planet Earth that's already in both a state of turmoil and paranoia, how will humanity react to their calls to aid mankind? Is it possible, even, that the V's may even have already been on our world before? Expects lots of action and stunts in this first season of twelve episodes, and the odd sly nod to previous ideas from the past series given an interesting updating in this post- 9/11 age, plus lots more new characters, and, according to new supervising producer Scott Rosenbaum, some exciting twists, plot and character-wise, that no-one will see coming. New directors to the show include STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION's Will Riker-Jonathan Frakes (who recently worked on the glossy, though morally dubious, DOLLHOUSE), and guests including BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's Michael Trucco, Lexa Doig and X-FILES's nasty Agent Krycek, Nicholas Lea. Will there be any cameos from the previous V? Like Marc Singer, as the news cameraman adventurer Mike Donovan, or Diana herself-actress Jane Badler-well, we'll just have to wait and see!!

Watch out for series highlights/episode reviews for the new V on a regular basis on KOOL TV, and our hopes are high that the series may at least go one season more than V's original singular season run in 1985. And there's an excellent US news site to look out for on all things V that's also well worth a visit:
