Welcome to our blog, today let's look on characteristics of language. As we know language is a tool which used by a human being for communicating with others. Language can be written or spoken, there is also difference between spoken language and written language we will discuss those differencces between spoken language and written language in the next post, but in this post let's discuss about the characteristics of language. Before we start to check those characteristics if language let's remind ourselves about the definition of the term LANGUAGE.
What is a language?
Language is a system of arbitrariness vocal symbols which are conventional and they used by human beings for communication purpose.
Characteristics of language
1) Language is duality; the word duality here means two things or people. When we say language is duality we mean that a language has the character of existing between two people or more, for more explanation it means, language exits where there is communication process and always communication is practised by more than one person.
2) language is interchangeable (allow interchangeability); this means that language allows two people or more to speak in turn, when one person speaks others become listeners of what is spoken and the listener will turn to be a speaker when he or she respond to what he or she have been told.
3) language is special; this means that languages differs in vocabularies and pronouciations according to specific society lives in certain environment. For example, people who lives near the sea or ocen may have a special language differ from people who lives far away from the sea.
4)language is productive: this means that language can be used to produce new words, phrase or sentences.
5) language can be transmitted by culture: this means that a language can be transmitted or inherited from one generation to another.
