A classic pair of jeans never goes out of style. The right pair can stay in your wardrobe for years—decades, even. "The most beautiful thing about jeans is that everybody wears jeans," says designer Tshepo Mohlala, who goes by "the Jean Maker." "Denim has no race: it's a fabric that can unify the world." However, while jeans have become a universal staple, the garment is still very much tied to Americana: U.S.-born brands, such as Levi's, have been making them since the mid-1800s. Recognizing a dearth of South African–bred denim brands, Mohlala launched his own jean line, TSHEPO, in Johannesburg as a way to take the jean and recontextualize it within the African landscape. Since its inception in 2015, it has become one of the city's most well-known brands.

Mohlala credits his love for denim to his family. Mohlala grew up in Tsakane, Gauteng, in a full household that included his mom, grandparents, and some of his cousins. He says being around this cast of characters, and particularly his grandmother, ignited an early interest in clothes. "The biggest thing that got me into fashion is that I come from a Christian background," Mohlala says. "My grandma is a pastor, so every Sunday we had to dress up and look good. Dressing up was part of my life." During those formative years, Mohlala also became infatuated with pop culture—specifically the R&B and hip-hop music videos that he would see on TV during the early 2000s. "It was a lifestyle that was unattainable: you can see it and you can dream it," he says. Mohlala particularly remembers his aunt wearing similar styles that his favorite rappers would rock, and she had a penchant for stylish jeans. "She'd come home dressed in denim-on-denim, and she'd look like all the people that I used to see on TV," he says.

When it came time for Mohlala to pursue a career, he naturally chose to pursue fashion design. In 2011, he dropped out of studying at the University of Johannesburg. He had learned the basics of sewing and pattern-making and decided to take a more hands-on approach by starting a brand with a couple of friends instead. "We did pretty well for young guys with no degrees in our hands," says Mohlala. For about two years, he zeroed in on the art of jean-making specifically, something he felt was a much-needed craft in Johannesburg at the time. "In South Africa, there aren't a lot of people with denim knowledge," he says, adding that he also picked up techniques through courses at Amsterdam's Jean School. "It's really difficult to get information sometimes, because not everything that you want is on the internet."

Since denim's ascension to daywear staple in the mid-19th century, it's seen more re-incarnations than probably any other fabric.

We've deconstructed it and re-constructed it, we've patchworked and embellished it, we've given it hardware and frayed it at the edges. And, like many trends, our taste in denim design is cyclical.

The latest denim bent to come back around for 2020 is painted jeans and this year's crop takes a few different guises. There are the splattered, splodged jeans, inspired by interior decorating or artists' studios, bearing the marks of overzealous Farrow & Ball usage or the rebound flecks from Jackson Pollock-esque creations.

Then there is the treatment of jeans as the canvas themselves, showcasing everything from seam-dwelling doodles through to a series of self-portraits.

Indeed supermodel of the moment Bella Hadid recently posted a series of Easter-time snaps of her frolicking through woodlands sporting a pair of '60s-referencing painted jeans by fellow model and artist Juliet Johnstone.

If, on the other hand, you're looking to flex your own creative muscles, painting your own denim during lockdown, there are just a couple of things you need to know in advance.

How To Paint Jeans

Firstly, why buy new denim if your plan is to attempt customisation? You'd do much better heading to a local (or online) vintage store or charity shop and nabbing a cost-effective pair which won't matter too much if the first attempt goes awry.

Or better yet, try your hand at customising a pair of jeans that you already own but which have been collecting dust at the back of the cupboard.

Next up, you'll want to wash them and let them dry thoroughly, as you don't want any dirt or other residues to sit between the paint and the denim, any of which could prevent your artwork from standing the test of time.

Then, you'll want to invest in some good quality acrylic paints, as these paints are not water soluble and won't stain all your other clothes in the wash.

You also might want to grab yourself a series of differently sized paint brushes. Acrylic does not wipe, nor wash off easily, so if you make a mistake, you're going to have to incorporate it into your design. Best advice? Start small, as small mistakes can easily be painted over.

If you're creating a design in a concentrated space, such as a back pocket, you can use masking tape around the border of your design, to prevent paint creeping over the lines onto the rest of the denim.

And finally, be brave, be bold, this is your time to shine.

For many of us (including this editor), the thought of completely giving up jeans during the summer months is unthinkable. Given that they're such a wardrobe staple for most, replacements don't come easy. "Avoid synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, which trap in heat and may make you sweat! Search for silhouettes that are off the body and cropped in length."
