Having recently announced her exit from singing competition show American Idol, “Waiting For Tonight” songstress Jennifer Lopez is moving on with her music and film careers hoping for bigger hits than she achieved while on the show. Last year, Lopez released her seventh studio album, Love?, and even though it was not a huge commercial success, the fantastic pop album brought her back on top of the charts. The actress/artist is readying a greatest hits album featuring two new tracks, “Dance Again” and “Goin’ In”, and making plans for an eighth full album. Looking back at last year, many more singles could have been chosen off Love?, but unfortunately only three got the chance. What should have been the fourth?
Even though “On The Floor” and “Papi” were perfect single choices, I could have done without “I’m Into You feat. Lil Wayne”. It just was not my favorite track off the record. “Papi” should have been single two and J.Lo’s camp should have quickly serviced the sure-to-be number one dance hit, the Lady Gaga-penned “Hypnotico”, to close the album era. The song has Gaga written all over it, with its repetitiveness and catchy production, but Lopez completely makes it her own by adding a little Latin flavor to it. Featured as a bonus track for the album, the song was my favorite moment from the 2011 album and would have dominated the charts once J.Lo and Gaga’s huge fan bases teamed up to honor its epicness.
“Hypnotico” has a quality about it that I seem to like. I could picture myself walking into a packed nightclub while men and women are dancing the hell out of this fun track. J.Lo’s voice has never been the greatest in the industry, but they win me over here even if they are accompanied by a loud beat. Lady Gaga wrote the lyrics and you can get a sense of Mother Monster almost instantly. “Hungry for some yum yum, gonna get me some some” may be one of the silliest lines heard in a song, but it adds to the carefree, party nature of the great pop track. J.Lo has been called one of the queens of dance music and this weapon in her arsenal is one that would have caused some damaged. Too bad it was never used.
If for reasons unknown “Hypnotico” was not chosen as the album’s fourth single, the sultry “Villain” would have been another fantastic possibility. The track is still pure pop, backed by an amazing beat, but it is one of the slower efforts on the track list. J.Lo is hoping her man overdoses on his own medicine on this break up song. The artist sings that she is now colder than winter and does not want to hear that her ex is alone, she does not really care. I enjoy the track because we never get to see the bad, revengeful side of the artist but here it is. It was weird to hear the song play as J.Lo was still married, but maybe it was a sign to trouble in paradise.
The song is something different for the artist. While it is still in the area of pop and dance, there is real meaning behind the lyrics. It may not have become a giant hit like “On The Floor”, but I think the song would have performed decently on the charts, a top 40 possibility for sure. Lopez’ vocals are strong once again and the track is extremely relatable. The artist is forgetting about a man that could not please her, she is not looking back and I could see many men and women singing along to this scornful track. A music video keeps playing in my mind and it is sad to know that a fantastic album only saw the release of three singles. “Villain” is one of the stronger cuts on Love?. It shows Lopez in her comfort zone and away from the horrors of R&B.
A fourth single should have been a no brainer. There are so many amazing tracks on Lopez’ seventh album. Low sales may have influenced the decision to quickly move on to new material instead of focusing on the gems hidden within the record, but I will certainly not forget what could have been. “Good Hit” could have been another, fun, sassy and sexy possibility. Scenes of a possible music video have already leaked and I would have liked to see great live performances. “Invading My Mind”, another Gaga penned effort, would have been nice for the dance charts and a ballad like “(What Is) Love?” could have attracted a whole new audience for Lopez. I guess we will never know though.
